His father, Amadeus Herzog, lived in the powerful city of Frankfurt. His mother, Amelia Winter, was from East Germany, born and raised under the imposing shadow of the Berlin Wall. The two met in the days after the Berlin Wall fell, and despite having differing thoughts on pretty much everything love bloomed between them. In hopes of escaping a post-Cold War economic downturn, the two emigrated to America together and shortly thereafter got married. The two were quite old at this point, Amadeus being born in 1958 and his wife in 1961, but the two still felt something was missing in their life. The family gave birth to three children: a girl in 1991, a boy in 1994, and another boy in 1998. The last of these boys is the focus of our story, young Nicholas Herzog. Being born at such a distant age from his siblings, Nicholas found it kind of hard to fit in. His older brother, Hans, cared greatly about him, but often had to shun the boy to fit in with his friends. They tired of Nicholas, four years their junior, tottering after them and constantly trying to do their "big boy" activities. Nicholas' sister, Alexis, was just a complete mystery to him: when he was barely starting school, she was already lost in the world of pre-teen girliness. While initially Nicholas could always rely on Hans for company, Hans started spending more time with friends and less time with his brother. Poor Nicholas began to feel very lonely. In 2004, however, Nicholas discovered the miracle of video games. His old-fashioned parents, new to this kind of technology, had no idea what they would unleash when they brought their child a Nintendo DS. Nicholas was positively enthralled, almost inseparable from his gaming system. He began constantly hoarding his allowance to buy more games, and even began pestering his brother to play games on his computer. Nicholas proved to have a surprisingly strategic mind: whenever he and Hans compared cities in SimCity, Nicholas' always seemed more expansive. As Nicholas grew older, he began to explore other interests as well. When he was 10 he tried cooking for his family all by himself. Calling it a disaster would be a huge understatement: the chicken he was cooking exploded in the oven, and he accidentally burned the side-dish noodles. After getting over their initial anger, his parents were impressed by his maturity and agreed to show him a few things. High school was where Nicholas started to come out of his shell: the few close friend he had in elementary school came with him, but he also began to make new ones. The fact that his brother was a senior, and an incredibly tall one, stopped bullies from trying to pick on Nicholas. Extracurricular activities like a gaming club gave Nicholas new outlets to find friends at. For a while, everything seemed perfect. Shame happiness does not always last . . . As Nicholas was coming home from the last day of school in freshman year, ready to start his summer vacation, he found out tragic news. A man had tried to break into their house, and his father was stabbed trying to fend him off. While the police were able to arrest the thief, Amadeus died on the floor of his own living room. The family was crushed, and as instructed in his will cremated him. His ashes were to be taken back to Germany and tossed into the North Sea. More than anyone else, Nicholas was devastated. He was incredibly close to his father, and could barely keep his composure. For days he shut himself off from all of his friends, too depressed to even speak with them. Like the Nicholas of old he retreated into his games, desperately trying to gain happiness from them. Not even his beloved big brother was able to console him: Nicholas' sorrow was impenetrable. I'd love to say there's a happy ending to this story, but sadly this is where our tale ends for now. Nicholas and his family planned travel to Germany is due to happen tomorrow, but a complication has arisen. After all, Nicholas used to play Digimon in his spare time. As many others did, he found himself receiving a certain e-mail . . . Finally, he fears losing the few people that he does hold close to him.
