From the time of their birth, the young pair were attached at the hip. The young mother’s name was Rosalie. A beauty with long hair and gentle eyes. They were never to truly know their mother though. She never recovered from giving birth to the children, for she was but the age of sixteen when they were delivered. Her body had been frail and the doctors had told her that she would never be able to bear children safely. Her husband would have none of it though, and eventually she relented to the older man and agreed to try to have children so that he may have his heir. Francis Etoile, the man behind the suffering, was fifteen years older than his tender wife when she relented to him about having children. That placed him at the age of thirty one when the siblings were born. It was an arranged marriage, Rosalie was poor and her family wanted her to marry into a richer, higher position. They never once loved one another for it was a political marriage and she could never bring herself to actually have any sort of feeling for Francis. Still, she loved her children for the short time she had with them. Disappointment was clearly running high with Francis as he saw that he was not going to only have sons, but would also have to put up with having a daughter as well. Whenever he looked at Aimee, all he saw in her eyes was his dead wife that he had all but killed with his insistence at having a child. He didn’t feel guilt about what he had done, only disgust at the tiny female child that had been tacked along to his son. Emilio at an early age began to recognize the malice their father had for his tiny sibling and soon became extremely protective of her in what seemed like an instant. At the age of five, Francis attempted to separate the twins by setting them up with separate tutors. Aimee was instructed in the French language and Emilio in Italian. She was to learn to be a proper lady and he was to learn how to run a household such as the business ends of things. They were to be kept apart at all times and weren’t even to sit across from one another at dinner. Aimee would cry herself to sleep and night and Emilio would try and find a way to bring the pair back together. Walking with one of his tutors in the garden, Emilio soon found a way that the pair could at least communicate back and forth. Aimee pleaded with her tutor to take her out to the Rose Garden in order to learn French and Emilio would plead to be allowed to study in the Hyacinth Garden next door. They would be separated by just a hedge and could easily pass notes back and forth to one another. Of course the teachers knew exactly what was going on. They did not approve of the way that Francis would keep the kids apart, knowing that in the end it would drive them even closer in all. At the age of ten, Aimee had become fluent in French and was teaching Emilio through the notes they were passing and the same with Emilio and his Italian. With the notes, they would pass tiny flowers and trinkets along. Once, when Emilio had gotten to go to town with Francis, he had bought a tiny silver locket that he put his and Aimee’s picture in. The locket had an imprint of a beautiful hyacinth flower on it. He told his father that it was for a girl he had met at one of the socials that his father was constantly putting on, attempting to find Emilio a wife and Aimee a husband in order to get everything on track, the way he wanted it. If he could try and make an arranged marriage soon enough, Aimee would be out of his hands in no time. She wore the locket everyday, under the top of her dress and would only take it out when she thought that her father would never see. In turn, when she went to town with one of her maids Aimee found a trinket for her brother. It was similar to the locket that he had bought for her, only his had the imprint of a rose instead. She passed it to him during one of their lessons a few moments before he passed hers to him. Francis delighted in questioning his children in order to try and find something that they had happened to do wrong. He was particularly interested in catching Aimee at doing something that would cause for her punishment. As a nervous reflex she went and grabbed at the tiny silver locket that she held so dear. Immediately recognizing it as the token Emilio had bought, Francis was in an uproar. He demanded to see the picture inside. It was one that put them as mirror images, each reaching out for the other in a desperate manner. There were to be no more tutors and no more socials, for either of them. He knew now that they couldn’t possibly be his own children, but Rosalie had to have mated with the devil to have created twins so attached as these. They would be the downfall of the household and they would ruin him. He would never get them married off. If they wanted to be together so desperately then together they would stay. He didn’t put them in the same room, for that would be shameful. Instead he put them in rooms right next to each other, with what looked like a mirror that covered half of one of the walls. This was the only way that they could see each other, through the mirror at certain times of the day. They couldn’t figure out a way to see each other at the same time, the light just never shone in the right direction for it. Each day they would spend their time, singing out in their respective languages to one another and one of them was always watching the other. At night they would fall asleep on the floor next to the mirror, hands desperately reaching out to touch the other. Francis re-married. Another young girl, not quite as young as their mother had been. This girl was of the age of twenty while he was forty three at the time. He was determined to have children of no relation to Satan, as his first children had been. She too was a pretty girl, her name was Annette. She would have no problem bearing children for Francis, so said the doctors and that was the main reason he married her. He cared nothing of love, only of a suitable heir to pass on his namesake to. Aimee began to become even more withdrawn, sleeping all the time, even when it was her turn to look through the mirror at her brother. She found more comfort in sleep than in being awake, separated by just a window pane. They tried to break the glass, one at a time but it was to strong for the flimsy materials of which their furniture was made. When she wasn’t sleeping, Aimee was writing furiously in a journal that she had found in the drawer of one of the dressers in the room. She drew pictures of the gardens in it and pictures of when they were children, hiding in the garden from their father. While his sister was becoming more subdued, Emilio became wilder and more outrageous. The furniture in his room was long destroyed by his own hands and the curtains torn at tattered. By the age of sixteen it appeared as if he had become the demon his father claimed him to be. All the while, Annette was told that the house was haunted and that sometimes the restless ghosts would try and get out of hand. But never to fear, her and her baby were safe from all harm as long as she didn’t go to the third floor of the mansion and open the last two doors. It was the only thing that kept her safe. Annette followed the advice of the servants, never going past the second floor for there was no reason for her to even bother with the third floor. It was where most of the servants lived anyways. She was an air headed woman, not intelligent like Rosalie had been. All she cared about was frolicking through the rose gardens where Aimee and Emilio had once shared secrets notes and exchanges back and forth. Emilio saw this, and the beast that had caused him to be so destructive grew, causing even more trouble. Still, Aimee began to sleep more and more, falling into a terrible depression that only looking through the mirror could abate even a little bit. She waited sleepily everyday for a chance to glimpse at the only person that cared for her and the only that she cared for. One day, the pair sat there and Aimee began to sing a slow ballad in French, just a simple song to keep her awake while she waited the light to reflect the right way so that she might see her brother on the other side. Emilio heard this and began to sing the same ballad in Italian. All of a sudden, the light reflected from a large mirror that Annette had some of the servants carry outside in order for her to admire herself while she was in the Rose Garden. She was such a shallow woman. As the light reflected off Emilio’s side the natural light his Aimee’s and once again they saw each other, and the desperate images they had become. He had wild eyes and her own were full of shadows and sunken in. They both held the same desperate look though and that was enough for Emilio. He backed away from the mirror and at full force pushed his own body against it, shattering it into a million pieces, never to be repaired. A large gash was cut into his arm to create a scar that would last him the rest of his life. Aimee was weak, she hadn’t been eating as much as she needed to lately and sleeping more and more. She had been tiny all through her life but now it was to a ridiculous standard. Emilio’s eyes were still wide as he walked over to his sister, finally they were reunited and now it was time for them to escape. Aimee was only barely aware of the fact that her brother had broken through the glass and thought that it was but an illusion or a dream placed there by the exhaustion again. So often she had pictured her brother breaking through the glass to save her and so now she couldn’t tell. She was fading in and out of reality once more. Attracted by the commotion, Francis rushed up the stairs to see what the demon children had done now. He opened the door to Emilio’s room first and seeing it in total and utter chaos he wondered if he shouldn’t have just killed the children outright instead of letting them live out their lives behind closed doors. Now, if he didn’t do something, the secret would be exposed. The estranged man looked over at the mirrored wall and saw that it had been broken out. He thought that Emilio or Aimee had killed themselves to get through that wall. He about had a heart attack when he watched as Emilio exited out of Aimee’s room, carrying her in his arms as though she were a child. She barely weighed more than one. His eyes were still wild and they were what scared Francis the most. He had no choice but to give up to their demands of real food, instead of the cold food they had been eating for almost seven years. Francis had an idea though, he could still keep his older son, and probably re-train him if he got rid of Aimee. So he sent his wife in, to try and seduce Emilio. Francis had set them up in new bedrooms, far away from one another. Aimee had not yet spoken to anyone, save for whispering what she wanted in Emilio’s ear. Other than that she refused to speak to anyone. She hadn’t actually spoken to anyone in such a long time that she had little desire to do so. Therefore Francis chalked her down as being a mute. He never bothered to pay attention that she did speak, only to Emilio though. So late at night, following her husbands orders, Annette made her way to Emilio’s room where the twins were both sleeping, refusing to be separated from one another again. She found him sleeping in the chair while Aimee was sleeping in the bed. Annette took him by surprise, placing her lips on his before he was even fully awake. This was one time that Aimee wasn’t asleep though, for fear that she would be separated from Emilio in the middle of the night while they slept. She had been watching as Annette creeped into their room and was calculating a way to get rid of her as soon as she made her way to her dear brother. Sneaking up behind her as quiet as a wraith, she pushed Annette of her brother and onto the floor. This time it was her eyes that held the wild look and seeing them made Annette run screaming for the door. She would have no part in her husbands ideas anymore and the siblings would have nothing to do with the house at all. They would set out as soon as Aimee was ready to travel. A few weeks later they were on their way to get as far away from their prison as possible. The two never to be separated again. They set their sights on traveling the best they could around the world to find a place that their teachers hadn’t even spoken of. A far off region that would give them both a new start.
